The wonderful scene that opens before our eyes is that of the apparition of Christ to Saint Catherine of Siena; she must choose between a golden crown, symbol of earthly royalty, and a crown of thorns, symbol of virtuous Christian sacrifice. Catherine does not hesitate to choose the crown of thorns, her life in imitation of Christ. The beautiful panel is the work of Cristofano Roncalli known as Pomarancio, one of the greatest interpreters of late Italian mannerism.
