The pool of Bethesda– Architectural capriccio
Oil on canvas, without frame cm. 50 x 63, with frame cm. 70 x 92
Expertise by Professor Giancarlo Sestieri
Vincenzo Re (1695 - 1762), born in Parma, was an Italian set designer who during his career worked initially as an assistant and then as head set designer at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. The work is an example of typical architectural capriccio. It represents an architectural fantasy that depicts a colonnade located on the shore of a lagoon. Vincenzo Re set the episode of the Pool of Bethesda, in which Jesus Christ heals a paralytic man in a pool of water in Jerusalem.
