Domenico Maria Canuti (Bologna, Italy, 1626 – 1684)
Dressing table of Venus with cupids and satyrs
Oil on canvas, without frame cm. 79 x 98 - with frame cm. 102 x 121
Original frame in shaped, sculpted, carved gilded wood and engraved parts
Expertise by Massimo Pulini
Caught in her complete nakedness, Venus is intent on cleansing her body, as demonstrated by the sponge she is dipping. A dressing table in which a satyr gored with vine leaves and a couple of cupids intent on looking at themselves also participate. An articulated and sensual composition in which the style of Emilian painting can be fully appreciated. The author of the canvas has been identified by critics as Domenico Maria Canuti, a 17th century Bolognese painter.
