The painting by Giovanni Battista Spinelli (1613 - 1647), Italian painter, depicts Jacob's dream. Giovanni Battista Spinelli was active in the mid-17th century, especially in Naples. His works are found in private collections and some are kept in the Uffizi and the National Gallery in London. This painting can be dated to around 1655, although Spinelli's canvases are difficult to date, as their quality is not uniform. The painting depicts Jacob in a deep sleep, surrounded by dark and threatening clouds, but in his dream a ladder of light appears, where angels ascend and descend.
