Oral expertise by Lisa Greaves

Hendrick Govaerts' activity takes place between two centuries: between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. Of Flemish origin, his activity was mainly concentrated in Antwerp, Belgium, where he is a member of the Guild of Saint Luke. It was a city guild of painters and other artists, present mainly in the Netherlands and Belgium. His fame is linked to paintings depicting genre compositions, scenes of parties and banquets in which people are portrayed happy, inebriated and entertained. The work in question is a typical example of the master's mature production, a perfect emblem of all the elements that characterize Govaerts' narrative and pictorial style.
