Matteo Bonechi (Florence, 1669 - 1756) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque, active mainly in Florence. The background of the painting features storm clouds approaching the group of various characters depicted in the main scene. The illustrated characters try to swim or float in a stormy sea, while joyful cherubs fly above them. The painting represents a seascape in which two sea horses are depicted pulling a large shell on top of which sits a man, who can be identified as Neptune, the Roman god of fresh water and the sea. He is surrounded by other sea creatures, including mermaids and Mermen. The play of light and shadow that characterizes the scene testifies that the painting was created as a preliminary model for a mythological fresco that was supposed to contain a larger scene.
