Natale Schiavoni (Chioggia, Venice, 1777 - Venice, 1858) was an Italian painter and engraver specializing in history and portraits. Born in Chioggia, near Venice, he worked in both Trieste and Milan and in 1816 became the official portraitist of the Austrian emperor. When he returned to Venice in 1820, he became a professor at the Academy of Arts. His works are exhibited at the National Gallery in Berlin, the Vienna Museum and the British Museum in London. The portrait, which depicts Schiavoni's sister, was created as a souvenir for Natale Schiavoni's friend, Luigi Sernagiotto, a Venetian collector whose collection was lost. The work is dated 1854 and was created in Venice.
